LCL and FCL comparison

Choosing the right container space for your cargo

LCL and FCL describe how your goods use a shipping container. With less-than-container-load (LCL), your cargo shares space with other shipments. With full-container-load (FCL), a container is allocated to your shipment. FCL does not mean you must physically fill every available space.

For imports to Ghana, the better choice depends on your packed cargo, the full transport bill and how the goods need to be handled. A small order may suit LCL; a larger or handling-sensitive shipment may justify FCL. Ask for a comparison before deciding on the ocean freight price alone.

LCL and FCL at a glance

Decision LCL FCL
Container use Shared space with other shipments Dedicated container for your shipment
Freight basis Usually quoted by weight or measurement Usually quoted per container
Cargo handling Consolidation and separation of shipments No shared-load consolidation step
Useful comparison Smaller orders and planned replenishment Larger orders or a need for dedicated space

Both options still need an agreed collection plan, accurate shipping documents, customs arrangements and delivery instructions. Review BJH Logistics’ sea freight services when planning the complete movement.

Start with packed volume and gross weight

Use the dimensions of the finished cartons, crates or pallets, including protective packaging. Product dimensions alone can understate the space required. Give the forwarder the number of packages and the gross weight of each package or the complete shipment.

For example, a retailer ordering a few cartons should compare an LCL quote against the cost of reserving a container. An importer combining several bulky orders should request both options using the final packing list. These are decision examples, not fixed size thresholds: the point at which FCL becomes competitive changes with the shipment and quotation.

Ask for the same scope

Compare quotes from the same collection point to the same delivery point. A port-to-port LCL price and a door-to-door FCL price will not show which option offers better value.

Compare the total cost, not one freight line

Ask each quote to identify origin collection and handling, ocean freight, destination handling, customs clearance support and final delivery. Confirm which items are included, payable separately or still subject to confirmation. Check the currency and quotation validity as well.

A lower freight rate can be outweighed by other charges. Equally, paying for dedicated container space can be unnecessary for a small order. Use our guide to how LCL shipping rates work to Ghana to understand the volume and weight basis before comparing totals.

Consider handling and cargo compatibility

LCL involves grouping shipments before sailing and separating them at destination. Tell the forwarder if your goods are fragile, cannot be stacked, have unusual dimensions or need special handling. Packaging should protect the goods throughout the agreed handling process.

Dedicated space may be worth comparing for a shipment that needs separation from other cargo. FCL still requires suitable packing and securing; choosing a container does not remove those responsibilities. Ask how loading, unloading and inspection will be arranged for your specific goods.

Build the delivery plan around the required date

Request the proposed sailing, cargo cut-off and expected availability after arrival. Distinguish vessel arrival from the date when your goods can actually be collected or delivered. Confirm whether the plan includes a transfer, consolidation warehouse or other handover.

If stock is needed for an event or production deadline, tell the forwarder before booking. Compare the proposed milestones rather than assuming that one container option always arrives sooner. If delivery to your premises is required, discuss door-to-door shipping to Ghana and the access needed for unloading.

A practical way to make the decision

  • Prepare one accurate cargo description, packing list and delivery requirement.
  • Request LCL and FCL prices against those same details.
  • Compare the total quoted cost and list any excluded charges.
  • Check handling requirements, cargo acceptance and the proposed schedule.
  • Confirm customs and delivery responsibilities before approving a booking.

Choose the option that supports the whole shipment. If shared space looks suitable, read when to use LCL consolidation for examples of smaller import orders and the details to prepare.

Is there one cargo volume at which I should switch to FCL?

No single volume is a reliable rule for every shipment. Request both quotes when the cost of LCL begins to approach a dedicated container, then compare inclusions, handling and delivery requirements.

Does FCL mean my container has to be completely full?

No. FCL describes dedicated container use. Whether reserving that space is worthwhile depends on the shipment and the complete quotation.
