LCL shipment planning
When shared container space fits your import order
LCL consolidation can be useful when an import order does not justify reserving a full container. Your goods travel in shared container space, with separate shipments brought together for the sea journey and separated at destination. The question is whether that arrangement fits your cargo and purchasing plan.
For imports to Ghana, start with the order size, supplier readiness, packing and required delivery date. A small shipment is a reason to investigate LCL, but acceptance and cost still need confirmation. BJH Logistics’ LCL consolidation service is a starting point for discussing those details.
Trial orders before committing to larger purchases
Imagine a shop importing an initial batch from a new supplier. The buyer wants to assess the goods and customer demand before placing a larger order. Comparing LCL can help the buyer assess transport for that first shipment without assuming a dedicated container is required.
Prepare the supplier’s final packing information before requesting a price. Check whether the order is ready to collect or still in production, and identify the collection address. If quantities change after the quote, send the revised package count and dimensions for confirmation.
Planned stock replenishment in smaller quantities
A business may prefer to replenish stock in smaller batches instead of buying enough goods for a container at once. In that situation, compare the cost of each LCL movement with the stock level you need and the receiving capacity at your premises.
Plan backwards from the date the stock is needed. Ask about cargo cut-off, the proposed sailing and destination release arrangements. LCL should be considered as part of an ordered purchasing schedule; do not assume that booking space means the goods are immediately ready to sail or deliver.
Orders from several suppliers
If you buy from multiple suppliers, ask whether their goods can be received at an agreed consolidation location. This needs coordination: each supplier may have a different collection point, packing method and readiness date. Combining orders is an option to assess, not an automatic inclusion in every LCL service.
- List each supplier, collection address and contact person.
- Provide a package count, dimensions and gross weight for each order.
- Confirm the date each order will be ready.
- Ask who arranges collection and how the cargo is identified on arrival.
- Agree what happens if one supplier misses the planned cut-off.
Keeping separate supplier records helps you check that the quote covers every collection and that the shipping documents describe the actual goods.
Check the cargo before assuming it can be consolidated
Explain what the goods are, how they are packed and whether they need special care. Highlight non-stackable packages, fragile items, liquids, batteries or other goods that may need a specific acceptance review. Photos can help explain an unusual package, but they should accompany dimensions and weights.
Confirm suitable cartons, crates or pallets with the supplier and forwarder. Identify each package clearly and provide a matching packing list. Do not rely on a product photograph to communicate the size of the finished shipment.
If your cargo needs dedicated space, an unusual loading arrangement or handling that a shared service cannot accommodate, compare LCL with FCL shipping. Ask for the reason for any restriction so you can assess the alternatives.
Prepare for clearance and delivery in Ghana
LCL does not remove import documentation requirements. The Ghana Revenue Authority lists documents including a bill of lading or waybill, invoice, packing list, Import Declaration Form and importer identification. Depending on the goods, regulatory permits may also be required.
Review the GRA import procedures and confirm the requirements for your goods before dispatch. Discuss customs clearance support and who will provide each document. Make sure the final delivery address and receiving contact are available.
Check whether the complete quote makes sense
Ask for the collection, freight, destination handling and delivery charges to be itemised. Confirm any minimum charge and which services are outside the quotation. Our explanation of LCL shipping rates to Ghana can help you prepare those questions.
Before booking, you should be able to identify the accepted cargo, supplier readiness dates, packing details, agreed service scope and delivery responsibilities. If those details remain uncertain, resolve them while the shipment can still be planned calmly.

Check whether LCL fits your next order
Share the origin, supplier details, cargo description, packed dimensions, gross weight and delivery address with BJH Logistics. We can review the requirements for an LCL quotation.
Can I combine goods from different suppliers?
Ask for a supplier consolidation plan before booking. Collection locations, readiness dates, identification and cargo compatibility need to be agreed; combining suppliers is not automatically included in every LCL quote.
What if my goods are urgent?
Give the forwarder your required delivery date and ask whether the proposed LCL schedule can support it. Request an alternative if the estimated milestones leave insufficient time for arrival handling, clearance and delivery.
